Honoring aHUS Awareness Day with Taylor Coffman’s Story

In 2024, Taylor Coffman first shared her story on The Life Shift Podcast. After the birth of her daughter, a rare disease called aHUS left her in multiple organ failure. Against all odds, Taylor survived – and transformed her journey into patient advocacy.

When Taylor reached out to remind me that September 24 is aHUS Awareness Day, it felt important to bring her story back. This replay is about the courage to advocate for yourself, the strength that comes from vulnerability, and the light that can grow in the aftermath of crisis.

Three things to think about

  1. Survival is often only the beginning of the story – what comes after can shape your purpose.

  2. Patient voices matter. Advocacy can be as simple as asking questions or speaking your truth.

  3. Gratitude is no longer a practice that Taylor forces. It’s something she breathes after nearly losing everything.

Two things to ask yourself

  • What would I say or do to advocate for myself in a medical or personal crisis?

  • How can I share part of my story this week to help someone else feel less alone?

One thing to try this week

Write down one moment each day that feels like a gift – big or small. At the end of the week, notice how those seven moments shape your perspective.

Taylor’s journey is a reminder that awareness saves lives, and stories connect us in ways we might not expect. I’d love for you to listen to this replay – and if it resonates with you, please reply and let me know what stayed with you.

PS: During a long weekend trip in May, I created a short-form podcast, “It’s Okay If…” Each episode is under three minutes long and provides a permission slip to simply be human. I’d be honored if you subscribed to the show. New episodes are released every Wednesday at noon ET.
